The word “Hinterland” is German in origin and means “back country.” The Hinterland is the land extension of port activity, linking the port to intermodal transport lines (rail, barge, road) receiving or shipping goods through the port. Its goal is to expand the economic activity area by facilitating supply chains of shippers and suppliers and improving goods flows.
