What is the Hinterland?
The word “Hinterland” originates from German and means “back country.” In the context of ports, the hinterland refers to the inland area connected to a port through intermodal transport networks (rail, barge, road) that receive or dispatch goods via that port. The goal of the intermodal hinterland is to extend the port’s economic activity zone by facilitating the supply chains of shippers and suppliers, thereby improving the flow of goods.
What modes of transport are involved in the Hinterland?
The hinterland involves three types of land-based transport modes, also known as modal shift: rail, barge, and road transport.
What type of goods does Inland5 allow me to track?
It currently allows you to track full containers, and we are working on tracking empty containers as well as bulk goods.
What are the prerequisites for using Inland5?
To benefit from Inland5 services, you must be a Ci5 user.
How can I optimize my operational performance (barge/train load) with Inland5?
Inland5 allows users to track the status of goods once the manifest is integrated into Ci5. With visibility on cargo status, carriers can anticipate which goods will exit the terminal and head to an inland terminal via one or more of the three modal transport modes (rail, road, barge).
